Lusitano-Cross-Country TodayCross-Country Today: All the initial and resting phases have been eliminated; the teams start off the competition from a box which starts the clock ticking as they exit from it. Once out of the box they must finish the course, be eliminated or withdraw from the competition for some reason. Courses are designed to have approximately six kilometers in many different types of terrain, flat land, uphill, downhill, wooded areas and different types of ground too. This is why it is so important for the rider to walk around the course two or three times before competing so he can plan each move the team is going to make.

Lusitano-Cross-Country TodayThere are several factors he must take into account before his run which are the key to his success or failure. The first would be the consistency of the ground through which the horse must pass. Soft, earthy ground is the best for running and for landing from any jump; it absorbs a lot of the chock that in other terrains goes to the horse’s legs. Rocky ground is a not adequate for high speed and the approach to jumps and other obstacles must be studied carefully to protect the horse and to complete the obstacle successfully. Uphill and downhill rides must also be planned carefully especially when the ground is lose or there are protruding rocks or other natural obstacles like trees or bushes, in the way.
