World Equestrian Games – A Triathlon.

Lusitano-031Eventing, the World Equestrian Games, is a Triathlon.   This is probably the most enjoyed part of an equestrian championship competition.   This is probably because it includes a little of every one of the regular tests performed on a man-horse team to measure their individual strengths and weaknesses.   Most important of all, it establishes how well they understand each other and work together.   This competition is administered by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI).

Lusitano-020It was once called “Combination Training”.   It was used by the cavalries of the world to test the endurance and will of their men and animals against the environment and other cavalry forces.   It continues to be difficult and very demanding.   But now it is done at the Olympic Games.   Teams from many of the countries in the world meet for the ultimate test of courage and camaraderie between horse and man.

Lusitano-023The competition can be held for one or three days.   The three day long competition is the most watched event during world, regional and local competitions because it is the toughest, roughest and most demanding of all.   Riders cannot change horses and horses cannot change riders either.   If one of them gets severely injured, they are out.   They are substituted by the replacement team.   The spirit and determination that event of the horses and riders was clearly demonstrated in the 1960 Olympics in Rome.   Three competitors representing Australia had one of their horses injured during the last phase, the jumping phase.   The fourth rider was in bed with a broken collarbone.   He stood from his bed and joined his teammates on the field to complete the jumping stage and win the gold medal.

Lusitano-055The competition is divided in three parts.   The first two days are dedicated to the dressage competition.   It is not as complicated and elaborated as the main dressage competition but it is not easy either.   The third day is for the cross country phase.   The last is for the jumping stage.   Sometimes depending on the number of competitors, it is stretched another day so two days can be used up jumping.
