Working Equestrian Competition – Cattle Penning Trial.

Lusitano-020Working Equestrian Competition’s Cattle Penning Trial. This exercise requires three or four teams of man and horse. A bunch of cattle are held within a seventy times forty meters space and each horse and man team must separate a specific cow from the bunch and take it to an assigned place with the help of the others. It is necessary for all the teams to coordinate the work because the rest of the cows cannot just wonder around; they must also be kept within a specific area. The team with the shortest time to complete the movement of each of the specific animals wins.

Lusitano-046This is basically what happens during a Working Equestrian Championship. Being a new competition it has taken a while for it to catch on and gain interest, it started back in 1996 with six countries being represented and today more than thirty are participating. It is really impressive to see how the horse and rider understand each other and sometimes you even think they can read each other’s mind when suddenly with no apparent signal from the rider the horse does this or that. Lusitanos are considered one of the best breeds for this type of competition not only for their endurance and strength but also because they have long memories and love to learn. Once a Lusitano feels his true master is sitting on top of him and he sees the course before him, the horse knows exactly what is expected from him and when he has to do it.
