Steeplechase

Steeplechase: races are held mostly in England, France and Ireland.

Lusitano-Horse Jumping SteeplechaseA steeplechase is a horse race through the country going over natural and artificial obstacles of many different kinds.   It is called a steeplechase because at the beginning the riders would direct themselves towards the finish line which was always somewhere near the town church.   They would simply jump every fence and ditch from the starting point heading in the direction of the steeple they could see at a distance.   Now they do not use a church to guide them towards the end but the rest of the race remains basically the same.

Lusitano-Horse Jumping SteeplechaseWhen we watch these magnificent creatures jump over the obstacles in the course with elegance and ease we tend to think that it is an easy thing to do.   The truth is that it is not, in fact it is hard and requires discipline and a lot of stamina to complete a clean circuit.   One of the most important characteristics a jumping horse must have is courage.   Courage does not come from training or constant practice it comes from the heart.   You can teach a horse to jump over obstacles and he will eventually do it.   But you can’t show them how to jump with style while they enjoy doing it.
