Lusitano-Your foal's future?What is your foal’s future?   Lusitanos are all beautiful and great horses but when the time comes to breed your mare there a couple of things you must consider before choosing the stallion to father your new foal.   Since breeding your mare will take considerable investment, time, and energy, it is important for you to plan what you will do with the foal.   The first thing to take into account is to follow your mare’s bloodline to find out who her parents were.   You are looking for information about what activity or sport her father was good at.   Examples could be bullfighting, jumping, dressage or some other sport or activity. With this, you go back in her father’s line and find the same information down the line for a couple of generations.

Lusitano-Your foal's future?The point of this exercise is to find out what kind of blood runs through his veins.   Once you have found enough evidence that your mare comes for example from a family of great jumpers, then you come back to the present and look at the available stallions and follow his track back looking for his jumper genes.   This may take some time but it is well worth the effort because you will be able to reinforce his aptitudes by adding to his gene pool material which contains the same characteristics of your mare from another stud house.

Lusitano-Your foal's future?It may be the same one your mare comes from just make sure that the family relation is four generations back.   A minimum of four generations will ensure that the genetic material matches and sets so that when it is time for your foal to be crossed he will pass these traits and characteristics to the following generations and he will also be a great breeder himself.   Now that you have found the way and know what you want your foal to be, it is time to decide how you want to get there.   This site includes a brief discussion about the qualities of each of the original stud farms in Portugal from where all the Lusitanos in the world originated.
