Should You Breed?

How to decide if it is worthwhile to breed your Horse.

Lusitano-015Should You Breed?   Breeding a horse is not cheap.   It involves a series of expenses which must be taken into account with regards to the care of the mare and foal, before, during and after pregnancy.   These differ when you are talking about a regular and a registered horse but you will still have to spend money to see the pregnancy through successfully.   It is not really worth going through the process if you are not going to be able to do it properly.   There are several things you must take into account before you decide to artificially inseminate or live breed your mare successfully.

Lusitano-016The first thing to consider is your mare’s health and age.   The ability to produce healthy foals decreases with time.   Possible pregnancy complications increase too.   Your veterinarian will examine her and recommend if she should bred and what, if any, dangers there may be for her health and the foal.   The second would be if your mare has any special qualities or characteristics you would want to pass on to a new generation.   Since this is the most important reason for selective breeding you should think about this and about the traits and characteristics you want the foal to inherit from the stallion too.
