Planning for the Foal

What do you want to do with the foal?

Lusitano-053What do you want to do with the foal?   Will you keep it or do you want to sell it?   This brings up another important point.   If your intent to keep the foal, then go ahead.   Just make sure that you pick the right stallion so that the resulting foal is better than his mom and inherits some of the traits of his father.   If you wish to use the horse in specific events like jumping or dressage, you must look into the stallion’s history to make sure he is a good jumper or dressage horse.   Of course your mare must also have either the experience in these sports or at least have the necessary physical characteristics typical to the sport you intend to use it in.

Lusitano-049If you are going to sell the horse, things change a bit.   You must choose a stallion that comes from good blood, if possible and within your means, it must be registered.   There must also be a market for it and although there are always people who want to buy horses, especially if it comes from animals which are recognized, the price you will sell it for must be right.   There is no sense in breeding your mare with an average or bottom line stallion if you plan to sell the foal.   There is simply no money in it.

Lusitano-025When planning to breed your mare, here are some of the expenses you will have to pay.   First, there is the stud fee.   This can range between a few thousand dollars to the hundreds of thousands of dollars.   This depends on the pedigree and quality of the stallion (family lineage, price winner, competition champion, etc.)   The better the stallion’s profile is, the more you will have to pay for his semen or live jump.   Then you must pay for the feed, management and veterinary costs of keeping the mare while she is pregnant.   You will also need to include the cost for her and the foal after she delivers.   Your average costs may also increase if you use special fertilization techniques or there is pregnancy and delivery problems.

Lusitano-059These are just a few of the things you must consider before embarking on this trip.   Careful consideration is imperative to make sure you can cover the regular expenses.   You must have a little extra on the side in case of trouble.   If you are not ready for this you may end up selling your precious foal at a loss or you may not be able to sell it at all.
