Moving to their new Residence.

Lusitano-New ResidenceMoving to their new residence.   The mare and foal should at first be moved to a place where they have adequate shelter from the elements.   The shelter does not have to have a door, in fact, it is better for it to be open.   Then they can both go outside whenever they feel like it.   The walls should be high enough to protect it from the wind and rain and yet allow air and light to come in.   The area surrounding the shelter should be open and large so the foal can run and jump around whenever it wants to.   This is very important to maximize muscle development and stability.   Too much time in a crampy stable will hamper his development and growth.   There are a few things that must be taken care before they move into their new home.   The first is the surrounding fence, it must be high enough for the mare not to be able to jump over it.   Be especially careful if the mare is a competition jumper.   She may decide at any time to jump the fence and join other horses outside.   Or, she may decide that the grass is greener on the other side too.

Lusitano-New ResidenceThe bottom part of the fence must be covered with chicken wire or any other safe wire that will prevent the foal from hurting itself if it decides to put a leg or its head through it.   Remember its legs are still weak and his bones are not solid yet so any crazy maneuver it attempts can be very dangerous.   Do not use wood or any other solid material to keep the foal inside, it is curious and enjoys keeping a lookout on the outside and on other horses hanging around.   When possible install the wire fence on the inside of the wooden fence and all the way up to the top wooden cross piece so you will not need to add wire on top as the foal grows.   The grounds must be kept clean and obstacle free to avoid the foal getting tangled on a wheelbarrow or other objects lying around.
