Foals First Few Weeks: A few more things to make sure your foal will grow healthy.

Lusitano-039The Foals First Few Weeks:   You have done your best to ensure the birth of the foal and the well-being of the mare.   There are just a few more things you must do to make sure that all is well and your foal will grow healthy and strong.   For the next few weeks, keep an eye on the newborn.   When everything is fine with them they are active.   They move around and are very alert to everything happening around them.   If you find that he is not feeding regularly, he is sleeping too much or seems distracted or lethargic and slow, your foal may have an infection, diarrhea or breathing problems.   Monitor his temperature, breathing rate and the effort it makes to breathe.   Watch him while nursing too.   He may be having problems with his mother.   Check the consistency and color of its manure too.   If these conditions persist your veterinarian must examine and test him to find out what is happening and remedy the situation.

Lusitano-030Congratulations!!!   You are now the proud owner of a healthy foal and a proud mother.   Even though they are very sociable, soon your foal will start eating other things and will leave his mother behind to hang out with the other foals.   But, this is the way of the world.   Eventually, we all separate from our mothers physically, but never spiritually.
