Lusitano-057FEI has included an event which is greatly appreciated by the assistance to its local and international competitions.   It is called Para-Dressage.   It is an event where people with disabilities compete against each other.   Para-dressage is part of the FEI equestrian disciplines since 2006.   It has been growing constantly since then.   It is part of the Paralympic Games program too.   To promote a fair and competitive challenge to the participants FEI does not only use their riding experience as a guideline but the riders are also classified according to their disability.

Lusitano-049One important point to make with regards to this competition is that there is nothing special or different about the horses they ride.   The horses are normal, full-size, athletes which have learned to understand and love their riders even with the disabilities they have.   It is sometimes necessary to add special safety equipment to saddles and stirrups for the riders to be comfortable and able to instruct their companions.   Besides this, the para-dressage competition is like any other in the world.   The rules are the same the times are the same as in any other competition.

Lusitano-065Horse riding is considered a therapeutic tool for people with certain disabilities.   You can see them riding around in parks and riding schools all the time.   Several years ago during a meeting of all the world equestrian associations, they decided to incorporate para-dressage into their official list of international and national competitions.   It is truly amazing to watch people with disabilities handle and maneuver their horses while executing professional dressage steps with ease and confidence.
