Training a horse for dressage

Lusitano-Dressage TrainingDressage Training: In order for a horse to be trained to compete professionally in this discipline it must not only have the physical characteristics listed on this website but must also be patient and always willing to learn more, to apply itself more to the teaching it is receiving. The training methods are standard although each trainer has his only tricks and methods which he believes help or improve his horse’s performance. The training manual and procedures were instituted by the German National Equestrian Foundation but each trainer and expert adds a little something he believes makes his horse better than the others.

Lusitano-Dressage TrainingTraining is divided into six stages and advance from one stage to the other is not a matter of time but of the horse’s ability to perform the required actions regularly and without mistakes each time he is required to perform them. These stages are set or analyzed as a pyramid which leads from a strong, intelligent and persistent horse to a ballet dancer who can almost perform by itself without the need of a rider.
