The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in Lusitanos.

Lusitano-056The chest must be big but not to big that it may interfere when the horse raises its front legs for a jump or dance step.   A medium size barreled chest is ideal to maintain freedom of movement on the front legs but also to increase the horse’s endurance.   A chest that is too small or compact will not hold enough air.   The horse will have to breathe more times than it would if it had a larger chest.   This which would lead to him tiring faster than it should.

Lusitano-040The ribs must start curbing slightly from the very point where the join the spine, slightly at first increasing their curvature as they descend.   A horse with that has something like a “flat” area on its back will be uncomfortable to ride and his movement will be awkward.   It will not be able to move fast enough either and his middle will be too heavy for delicate exercises.   Ribs that go almost straight down will not give enough lung capacity to the horse so it will not have the necessary endurance for competence and long hauls.

Lusitano-037Short legs will push the horses balance forward and if you combine this with a heavy head or long neck the horse will probably be good only for leisure riding.   A horse with short legs will also have to take more steps to cover the same distance a horse with regular size legs has to take this will make the horse tire faster and will also cause discomfort to the rider with its “jumpy” stride.   Long legs, like the Lusitano has, are the best, they provide for a comfortable ride, allow the horse to turn on a dime and give you eight cents change, and they will also excel at different sports and competitions.   Long legs travel distance faster so the horse is able to travel longer without getting tired.

Lusitano-046These are details you must be aware of and must also go over slowly and with a clear head.   It is not important that the horse is beautiful and you like it very much.   You must also be able to ride anywhere and do with it anything you want to do.   They are meant to enjoy and ride, not just to look at them.
